PHS 50th Reunion

As you can see, everyone was having a happy time getting ready for the official class photo. Thanks to Dallas Brickhouse for taking the photo and getting them printed. From the comments received, everyone enjoyed the fellowship, entertainment, and food. It was so nice to see each other. In five years, we'll do it again so save the date! (September ??, 2015)

Jack Brinn writes from Wyoming

Fellow Classmates,
I won’t be attending the reunion primarily because I’m teaching part time at the University of Wyoming this semester. Why Wyoming? For starters, our daughter and her two sons live in Laramie where she was born when I was a student at UW. Next, we still have strong ties to friends from graduate school days out here, including a couple from Elizabeth City.

Finally, we have a house in northern Colorado near Red Feather Lakes, which is about an hour away from Laramie, and Peggy and I are transitioning to it. Upon retirement from ECU after almost 38 years, I offered to to teach at UW, and they accepted. Given the driving time to UW, I can overnight at our daughter’s home if the need arises, especially when the road is closed by wind or snow. So I’ve been here most of the summer, playing Mr. Fix-it, enjoying the outdoors, and refining an old photography hobby, and will remain until sometime in December. Depending on the season, we have deer, elk, moose, coyotes, bobcats, bears and mountain lions as “neighbors.” The summer was a wet one and the wild flowers were extraordinary. On clear nights the sky is brilliant with stars and the Milky Way looks like a long wispy cloud overhead.

Peggy still works for a retirement investment firm in Cary, much of which can be done on line. While she has to be in the office periodically, she travels to and from Colorado, working from here as easily as if she were in Greenville. Our three boys, each with one son, reside in NC, so Peggy “grandmothers” them as much as possible. We’re anticipating that all will come to Colorado for Thanksgiving.Some of this countryside as well as family images are on my Web site: http://redfeatherimages.com.Best wishes to all, and I hope everyone has a great time at the reunion.___Jack Brinn

50 Years Ago -- Remembering

On August 27, 1960, I married Thurman at Anderson Methodist Church in Perquimans County.

Below we celebrated our 50 years at Ruth's Chris in Virginia Beach. We were served a delicious meal and given complimentary dessert by the manager. We chose cheesecake as a compromise. I love chocolate and he loves banana pudding. After dinner we rode to the beach and strolled the boardwalk.

Congratulations...Larry Willis

While attending the Boy Scout Jamboree, Larry was notified on July 28, 2010 that he had been chosen as an inductee into the BSA 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership. Larry has been Scoutmaster of Windsor’s Boy Scout Troop 41 for the past 41 years. While Larry has received many scouting awards, including the Silver Beaver Award and the God and Service Award, the Hall of Leadership is the most prestigious. The following is a description of the Hall of Leadership.

“The BSA 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is not a hall or building in the traditional sense, but its purpose is just as significant. The National Hall of Leadership provided an opportunity for anyone to recognize outstanding leadership by a Scout, registered leader or Scouting volunteer who made a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled. The National Hall of Leadership was created as part of our 100th Anniversary Celebration to gather these powerful stories and share the significant and positive impact Scouting leadership has on the quality of life in the communities we serve. And, wow, more than 7,000 nominations shared amazing and inspiring stories! All nomination stories will be part of the BSA 100th Anniversary archive at the National Scouting Museum. One individual was selected from each council to represent all the nominees of their council and the gift of leadership given by the Scouts and scouters of that council to the communities they serve each year. Our country will never outgrow the need for thoughtful leadership, and will never outgrow the need for individuals who choose to live their lives by the Scout Oath and Law... and teach others to do the same. As we head into our next century, our Scouts and Scouters will still be there to lead the way, just as we have for the past 100 years!”

THE CLASS REUNION

(Sorry, I could not upload the pictures)
Every five years, as summertime nears,
An announcement arrives in the mail,A reunion is planned;
it'll be really grand;Make plans to attend without fail.

I'll never forget the first time we met;
We tried so hard to impress.
We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars,
And wore our most elegant dress.
It was quite an affair; the whole class was there.
It was held at a fancy hotel.
We wined, and we dined, and we acted refined,
And everyone thought it was swell.

The men all conversed about who had been first
To achieve great fortune and fame.
Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses
And how beautiful their children became.
The homecoming queen, who once had been lean,
Now weighed in at one-ninety-six.
The jocks who were there had all lost their hair,
And the cheerleaders could no longer do kicks.

No one had heard about the class nerd
Who'd guided a spacecraft to the moon;
Or poor little Jane, who's always been plain;
She married a shipping tycoon.
The boy we'd decreed 'most apt to succeed
'Was serving ten years in the State pen,
While the one voted 'least' now was a priest;
Just shows you can be wrong now and then.
They awarded a prize to one of the guys
Who seemed to have aged the least..
Another was given to the grad who had driven
The farthest to attend the feast.
They took a class picture, a curious mixture
Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties.
Tall, short, or skinny, the style was the mini;
You never saw so many thighs.

At our next get-together,
no one cared whether They impressed their classmates or not.
The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal;
By this time we'd just all gone to pot.
It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores;
We ate hamburgers, coleslaw, and beans.Then most of us lay around in the shade,
In our comfortable T-shirts no tie and jeans.

By the fiftieth year, it was abundantly clear,
We were definitely over the hill.
Those who weren't dead had to crawl out of bed,
And be home in time for their pill.
And now I can't wait; they've set the date;

Our sixtieth is coming, I'm told.
It should be a ball, they've rented a hall
At the Shady Rest Home for the old.
Repairs have been made on my hearing aid;
My pacemaker's been turned up on high.
My wheelchair is oiled, and my teeth have been boiled;
And I've bought a new wig and glass eye.
I'm feeling quite hearty, and I'm ready to party
I'm gonna dance 'til dawn's early light.
It'll be lots of fun;
But I just hope that there's one Other person
who can make it that night.

Pat R. Alexander - Last 10 Years in Summary

Okay, it’s my turn and I’ll try to make it brief. I retired from my job as HS bookkeeper with Virginia Beach Schools after 28 years in 2005. After a couple of months, I came to enjoy being retired and now I’m like every other retired person and wonder how I ever had time to work. Some of you will know what I mean. My son, Tim, who had 4 children in 2000, gave me 2 more grandchildren, Harrison, (8) and Sheridan (3). For more about Tim’s family, you can check his website at http://www.alexanderadventures.com/ . There are lots of pictures of his beautiful family. Three of my grandchildren have graduated high school, April, Meredith, and Elliott. April married Alexander in 2006-making me have 9 grandchildren. April earned her BA degree in 2009 and is working on her Masters in Library Science. Her husband is a graduate of UT at Knoxville and received his masters at Treveka Nazarene University. Meredith has her real estate/broker license and lives at home with her parents. She is engaged to Stephen and a December wedding is planned. Elliott is doing organic farming with the family business in Amelia, VA. Jake is a junior in high school (Gallatin, TN). Oliver, Sullivan and Harrison are home-schooled and Sheridan is so sweet. My daughter, Sherry, is teaching in Gallatin, TN and recently earned her Master’s degree from Treveka Nazarene University. Her husband, Gary, is working on his degree. That sums up my children and grandchildren. Sheridan (3) and Harrison (8) are
pictured here sitting in a tire swing. I love taking pictures of the grandchildren.

A few days after my retirement, our best friend, Curtis, was accidentally killed on his job site. We were devastated as it changed our life considerably. The next year, Thurman started a renovation on our house in Chesapeake, VA adding 8 feet across the back, remodel of the master bath, bedroom and walk-in closet which made some changes in the family room and deck.

About 3 years ago, Thurman and I bought a second home in Okeechobee, Florida. We were spending a couple of months at the Big O RV Resort (in a 30 ft. RV) when Thurman found a DEAL--a park model “fixer-upper”—pictured before and after. Thurman is talented enough to do the work himself so that’s where we go in October, January, February, and March. Unless he starts another project, he will be finished with the renovation this coming October when we hope to return to the Big O. Not much was accomplished this winter because of family illness and death. Thurman’s stepfather passed away in February and his mother is now living with his sister. We are learning to take things as they come. We have many friends at the Big O who come from all over the US and Canada. People call us “Snow Birds”.

Besides Florida, we and/or I found some time for a cruise to Bermuda and one to Boston, New England and Canada. We visit our children every chance we get and occasionally attend Blue Grass Festivals.

Carlton Boyce Surgery

Dear Classmates,

I received a call from Carlton's sister this morning informing me that Carlton fell on Friday and broke his left shoulder. He had surgery today at Albemarle Hospital. The surgery went well. He is in room 260 and he will be there for a day or so. Since he lives by himself, he will be moving to a local nursing home for a while. I told him that I would be passing this information on to you. Keep Carlton in your prayers. He is having a lot of pain.

Pass it on

Jimmy Sullivan is but one of 42 classmates who has a computer and e-mail so let's hear from someone else. It's a great way to catch up on what's been happening in our classmates lives over the past 10 years. Someone suggested that if you know something about someone else in the class, you might want to share. If someone has a special talent, we'd like to know. It will be great to see each other in September and hear from you now.

Jimmy Sullivan - The Past Ten Years

The past 10 years have been very eventful. First of all, I retired 10 years ago. I had one of those enhanced retirement opportunities which I and many others could not resist. Within a few months the business was sold thus my decision to retire early was the right one.

My two sons were close by but work took them many, many miles away. The closest is in South Carolina near Columbia, the other is in Utopia, Texas. Yes there is a Utopia!!! It is about 70 miles west of San Antonio in what is called the Texas Hill Country.

The biggest event in the past 10 years was the sudden death of my wife due to a stroke almost 7 years ago. It was about that time that the boys moved away as well. Needless to say, things have not been the same. I have considered moving but I have not done so. My mother is still living in Hertford thus I remain close by. I go in to see her about once every two weeks so I keep in touch with what is going on around town. I do not get to see many folks because all my time is spent with her.

The picture is of me and my gang. It was taken where we were all together in Texas last July. My grand girls are now 4 and 10. They live in South Carolina so I get to see them fairly often. I've even had opportunities to look after them while their parents were gone for a few days. I had to learn how to change diapers again!!!!!!!!

My time is spent doing stuff around the house here trying to get it undated and ready for sale if I decide to move. I have 4 boats I'm messing with. One is an old ski boat I had when the boys were growing up. I have another larger one that I’m getting ready to do some serious water traveling with. I want to explore all the rivers and sounds from Virginia to South Carolina. I also have an antique wooden boat made by Grady White that I hope to start restoring soon. The last one is a sailboat. A nice little 20' day sailer.

If you are ever down my way here in Greenville, stop by for a visit!!!

Looking forward to seeing you at the reunion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PCHS CLASS OF '60 PLANNING MEETING #3

May 22, 2010: C.D. invited us to meet at his lovely home in Winfall. In the pictures, you will see the beautiful place where he and Joanne live. If you come to a meeting, you definitely will get your picture posted online. Seven class members attended: Lenna, Linda, Carolyn, Brenda, Carlton, C.D. and Pat. We accomplished much of the business which included assigning the committees for the Newbold White House Reception, Memorabilia, Memorials, Decorations, and the program. If any of you have any memorabilia of our high school days, please contact Brenda (bkebrick@yahoo.com) and plan to bring it to the Reunion for display. If any of you wish to help on any of the committees, see the list below.

PCHS Class of '60 50th Reunion Committee Meets

On Sunday, April 25Th, 2010, the committee met at the home of Alice Spivey in Elizabeth City.

Classmates attending were Carlton, C.D., Carolyn, Dorothy, Brenda, and Pat. We accomplished quite a bit, assigning committees for each of the 3 days, deciding on the menu and price, dress, hosts of ceremonies, discussed entertainment, memorial, class gift and memory displays. We decided to invite the classes of 1959 and 1961 to the reception on Friday night. A letter will go out by the end of June with all the details. Those who have furnished e-mail addresses will receive their letter by computer and the others will get theirs by US Mail. After taking care of business, we enjoyed some delicious refreshments. Those Winfall classmates had too much fun talking, laughing and imitating their grammar grade teachers!! Take note Hertford classmates will need to come up with some funny experiences to top them. If you'll notice, I(Pat) was outnumbered 5 to 1.

The next planning meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 22nd, at the home of C.D. and Joanne at 10:00 am-12:00 pm. Their address is 101 Smith Cove Road, Hertford, NC 27944. We hope some more of you will be able to attend. We have a great time!

It's a Small, Small World!

Alice, Brenda and I went to The Onley Place dinner theater on Saturday night. Much to our surprise, Dorothy Ann was there with a friend and Arlene and her sister, Janice, also were there for the dinner and show. We had fun reminiscing. You never know who you will see where! The Onley Place is out in the "woods" from Belvidere. All the locals have heard of it. It is a very neat place with great food and entertainment. Pictured are Dorothy, Pat, Brenda, and Arlene.

The following letter was sent by e-mail to those who furnished their e-mail addresses. To contact us, please send e-mail to pchs1960@yahoo.com.
Hi Classmates,

The time is drawing near for us to get serious about planning our 50th reunion. We have survived a cold winter and now we must get to work. I know it's not reasonable for some of you who live far away to attend our upcoming committee planning meeting but I do hope some of you who live near Hertford will consider coming. As a reminder, it will be Sunday, April 25, at the home of Alice Spivey (Brenda's sister) at 605 W. Colonial Avenue, Elizabeth City at 2:00 p.m. Please let Brenda or me know if you will be able to attend or just respond to this e-mail.

Our 40th reunion was so much fun for everyone and I want this to be just as memorable. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please send them to me before April 25th.

Our next planning meeting is scheduled for May 23rd.

Where Is This Landmark?

I know this landmark is familiar to all of you. Actually it looks the same as it did 50 years ago. Some things never change. Guess where! Perhaps you have pictures you'd like to share. Send them to me and I'll post them for our classmates to share.
